City Council candidate Meghan Sahli-Wells is hosting an evening of theater, food, and art on Saturday, March 20.

Her latest fundraiser will culminate with a special performance of Break the Whip, a new play written by Academy Award winner Tim Robbins.

The groundbreaking theatrical production will be performed at Culver City’s Actors’ Gang Theater, where Mr. Robbins serves as Artistic Director.

The evening’s festivities begin at 6 with an optional dinner at Gyenari Korean BBQ restaurant in adjacent Downtown.

At 7, there will be a Wine and Cheese Reception and Silent Art Auction in the Actors’ Gang lobby, followed at 8 by the performance of Break the Whip.

Presented by the Actors’ Gang ensemble in its signature style, and using shadow puppetry, music, dance and three languages (supertitled), Break the Whip shows how the humanity that this country is built upon was ravaged and reborn in the past.

The play tells a compelling and honest account of the Colony of Jamestown in 1607, which suffered yet endured over a decade before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

Mining the historical works of revered historians, including the recently deceased, best-selling author Howard Zinn, Break the Whip presents a history that supporters say never has been told.

At Jamestown, the convergence of peoples — the Powhatan Indians, English settlers, and West African slaves — sets the course for the complex combination of cultures that is the history of the United States.

Funds from the event will benefit Ms. Sahli-Wells’ campaign for City Council, The Actors’ Gang Theater, and Gyenari Korean BBQ (if dinner ticket is purchased).

Tickets are $30 for general seating, $50 for premium seating, and a $100 special package that includes premium seating and dinner at Gyenari.

Tickets can be purchased by visiting the campaign’s website at www.vote4meghan.com. Questions about the event can be emailed to info@vote4meghan.com
