Choosing Kindness

Last week I rode the turbulence of anger and sadness in the name of compassion for my sister. (For that essay, please read last Friday’s unscheduled column, “Fighting A T&T for a Crime Victim.”)

Thankfully, even by the end of that outburst, I had realized that any sort of negative thought or action is counterproductive… and in fact would be the same as causing harm to my sister or myself.

Even if they are strangers in name.

Ever since learning of her attack, I have been continuing my acts of kindness towards strangers and loved ones. I have let others cut in front of me at the long line at the Post Office, gave an extra tip to a server, and sent more emails of appreciation to those I haven’t spoken with in too long.

In return, I have witnessed strangers performing acts of kindness towards others, much the same as me.

We are all mirrors. And I choose not to fight but understand. And to be a reflection of light and happiness.

This holiday season I wish for everyone to see – through being – the good in people.

Happy holidays.
