Re “Culver High vs. Student: Should She Be Allowed to Play”
I am puzzled by the recent letters to the editor concerning extra curricular activities at Culver City High School.
I think we all agree that the purpose of schools is to give our children a broad education and socialization in preparation for adulthood.
Part of the journey to adulthood is learning that choices have to be made and stuck to.
In the original letter, the parent proclaimed that his daughter's participation in both programs was her right. He questioned the judgment of a coach/teacher.
Subsequent letters continued along the same vein. It is time to put in my 2 cents.
Growing up means making choices.
We are not always entitled to get everything we want.
Committment and showing up is 90 percent of success in life. Accepting disappointment and moving on are as important a lesson as striving to win.
Sometimes even your dad (mom) can't fix it for you.
I wonder if the parents who proclaim that their child can manage both programs, ideally keeping up with their classwork and family life, are really doing so in the best interests of their kids.
What happened to gracefully letting someone else take the spot? What happened to good sportsmanship?
I hope I don't sound like an old fogey.
In my day, the purpose of all extracuricular activities was to be a well-rounded person capable of entering adulthood with clear eyes and a balanced perspective.
