On the night of Thanksgiving, after the dishes were cleared from the table and our talk turned to the long weekend ahead and to holiday shopping, I was struck by the realization that I had forgotten to give thanks to some very deserving people in our community local small business owners.

Our local businesses are part of why our community is so special. I believe shopping locally is

green, sustainable and neighborly. Here are some of the reasons they deserve our thanks this holiday season:

Thank you for always greeting me with a smile, and they know my name.

Thank you for asking how my mother is doing, and being sincerely happy when I say she is well.

Thank you for waiting an extra fifteen minutes when I was stuck in traffic.

Thanks for calling me and reminding me that I had asked to be reminded about my appointment.

Thank you for donating to my kids’ fundraiser, and for putting up posters in your window.

Thank you for always stocking that part, size, color; it means a lot to be your customer in these days of big box stores and call centers.

Thank you for being patient when I could not decide; and for holding it till I came back.

Thank you for the extra cup of coffee on the house, and knowing that I only have an hour for lunch.

Thank you for laughing when I need a lift, or listening when I am chatty.

Thanks for donating your time and goods to service groups and local events.

Thank you for being a local business owner and a resident, you are a part of what makes our community home.
