Going Canvassing for Parcel Tax Affirms Decision to Move Here

A week ago Sunday, I was finishing up some last minute door-to-door canvassing for Measure EE, the parcel tax.

It was a hot day. I walked parts of Sunkist Park for about three hours, but in the end, I felt so gratified. The overwhelming support kept a smile on my face.

Yes, some were not home on this beautiful day and one voter was not sure how she would vote.

But I was elated with all the Yes responses.

I knocked on a lot of doors of senior voters. Many told me they moved to Culver City for the schools, and that their children received a top-notch education. They were voting Yes on EE because they want the children in school today to have the same opportunities.

I knocked on three doors where the voters did not have children in school now or before. They told me they were voting Yes on EE because they value a good education for everyone and because it is good for the community.

Families who are fairly new residents in the area, whose children go to El Rincon, assured me that I could count on their Yes vote, too.

It was nice to reconnect with some former teachers of CCUSD, now retired, who are voting Yes. It was also great to see parents I use to hang with at El Marino Park when our children were young.

Many parents wanted to share with me the success of their children, and I was delighted to hear about each one.

I spent more time with some seniors who are voting Yes on EE but wanted to know how to take an exemption if they find it necessary.

I wrote down the necessary steps they need to take in order to file for an exemption: First, they will need to fill out a simple form with name, address, phone number. The form will be available after the election at the School District offices on Irving Place and several other locations in Culver City. Or they could contact me and I will get them the form. They also will need to submit copies of 3 documents: their ID or driver’s license, their property tax bill, and one of their utility bills.

One senior said, “Well, that is pretty easy.” I reassured them that we are here to help them. I gave them the EE brochure, and I circled my name and phone number.

Yes, I am pleased that my husband, Paul, and I chose Culver City as the community we would call home and raise and educate our three children.

A week ago Sunday I saw full proof why we did.
