Culver City police late this afternoon identified a swarthy 28-year-old Hispanic as the chief suspect in an early Sunday attack on City Councilman Mehaul O’Leary at an Irish pub the Councilman owns.
His extensive injuries about the face are described as “serious.”
Mr. O’Leary, hospitalized since the incident around 2 a.m. Sunday, continues to undergo tests and may face surgery.
His alleged assailant was Robert Anthony Singerman, who is 6-feet-1 and weighs nearly 300 pounds, bulkily surrounding a round face and stylish hairdo that rises high in the middle.
Mr. Singerman, who lives just north of Culver City, remains at large, Capt. David Tankenson told the newspaper.
Police are asking the public’s help in locating the suspect, whom they say will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

It remains unclear whether the suspect allegedly used anything other than his fists.
At the sometimes rowdy hour of a little before 2 on a typical Saturday night at Joxer Daly’s pub, Mr. O’Leary was reported to be urgently escorting Mr. Singerman out the door since the night was over.
But witnesses said Mr. Singerman did not want to go.
The pair evidently had just made it through the back door into the parking lot when the suspect allegedly landed a haymaker that splattered across Mr. O’Leary’s face, felling him immediately.
Mr. O’Leary’s head struck the pavement hard, according to witnesses.
The Councilman, who is in his early 40s, prides himself on being known as a pugnacious athlete.
But he probably weighs at least 100 pounds less than Mr. Singerman.
