Prop. 8 Supporters Resort to More Lies…and a Cyber Attack?

Supporters of Prop.8, a measure that discriminates against same-sex couples, will apparently stop at nothing to deceive California. The ads they’ve been running, falsely claiming that children’s education will be affected by gay marriage are bad enough. But now comes this video footage of a Prop.8 supporter drawing on Hitler and Nazi Germany as an example of what will happen to religious believers if gay marriage is legal. See for yourself:

This is an outrage, especially considering that gays and lesbians were among the many groups targeted for persecution, imprisonment, and death by the Nazis. They too were victims of the Holocaust. For Yes On 8 to claim the mantle of victim when no one is denying their right to practice their religion as they see fit is the height of arrogance, and is insensitive and insulting.

But that’s still not enough. Beginning yesterday afternoon and continuing well into the evening, as far as I could tell, noonprop8.com was unavailable. My fears were confirmed when No on 8 Executive Committee Member Geof Kors sent out an eMail:

“Beginning last night and continuing this morning a coordinated cyber attack on the No On 8 website prevented some donors from being able to contribute. This attack is being investigated by federal authorities. Fortunately, there was no breach in security and we are again able to accept contributions online.”

Mr. Kors goes on to say:

“This insanity needs to stop. Prop 8 needs to be defeated. It's wrong. It's unfair. The people supporting it are fanatical, intolerant and willing to do and say anything to eliminate our rights.”

And he is right. Lying ads, cyber attacks on websites, exploiting children for their political purposes – the Yes On 8 campaign and their supporters are a shameful hotbed of bigotry masquerading as something else. They, like the repulsive tactics they have employed, need to be rejected on November 4th.

If you are still on the fence about Prop. 8, please understand that gay marriage is not an attack on religious freedoms. Churches are not required to perform or sanctify gay marriages if that is their choice, and believers are not being asked to accept gay marriage against their own beliefs. But these churches, like the Mormon Church which has so far contributed $20 million dollars to support Prop. 8, are trying to define CIVIL marriage for everyone else. This is wrong.

So please, don’t let the Yes On 8 campaign get away with their lies and attacks. Please vote No on Prop. 8 on November 4th, and, if you can, donate to No On 8 campaign at noonprop8.com.
