Here are the latest developments in Downtown Culver City regarding the one-block segment of Washington Boulevard, between Culver/Main and Ince:

One westbound lane of Ince Boulevard (by Trader Joe’s) opened up this morning and westbound Washington Boulevard was permanently closed.

Traffic signal synchronization programming and testing now are underway.

A pedestrian island is being constructed at Washington/Ince, in front of the Culver Mansion.

On or about March 31, both directions on the widened Ince Boulevard are scheduled to open up. Both directions of Washington Boulevard are scheduled to permanently close.

After March 31, the curb/sidewalk at Culver/Main that will close the former Washington Boulevard side of the intersection will be constructed in conclusion of the realignment construction project.

City staff is working with the developer, ity traffic engineers, and the General Contractor to develop a traffic plan that will preserve The Culver Studios driveway exits onto the former eastbound Washington Boulevard leading to Washington/Ince during future construction activities.

Joe Susca, Redevelopment Project Manager for the Community Development Dept., said this afternoon that construction on the crown jewel of the project — The Culver Studios Plaza, as the three-story building will be known — will start in late May or early June.

Late ’09 is the target completion date.

Around June 1 next year, the other two portions of the massive makeover in front of the historic Culver Hotel will be begun:

The expansion of Towne Plaza and the access road in front of the Culver Mansion.

“We are following the same pattern people do when they build a new home,” Mr. Susca said. “First you build the house, then you do the landscaping.”
