 No Washingtons Wanted

Off on a joyous family expansion mission for a few days last  week, Diane and I are just back from Santa Cruz, one of America’s most reliable bastions of liberalism. Osama, I am convinced, would receive a more enthusiastic greeting than Mr. Washington, unless Mr. Washington wore his powdered wig. That would make him a smash among the glassy-eyed along Pacific Avenue. There is much to commend Santa Cruz. But its taste in politics does not make the cut. Political rhetoric in Santa Cruz is like discovering a beautiful young woman — only she is hopelessly wracked with a terminal disease. Just shows how a few dozen U.C. politically-oriented professors on the woodsy Santa Cruz campus can seductively, insidiously, multiply their madness. They are poisoning thousands of gullible young men and women who don’t know better. Trees are not all that breathes and is green in Santa Cruz. The profs tell their students, “Open wide. Now swallow.” With a straight face, they even believe in global warming. Just don’t ask them to define it. That would bring an interminable pause.

Is That a Growth on Your Neck?

Intellectual growth in America has been slower than what passed for therapists in the 18th century would have predicted. Mr. Washington would be disappointed but not surprised by how little his favorite country has matured in the last 230 years. Liberal reporters and columnists dominate nearly all of the influential magazines, newspapers and television stations in America. Consequently, their views are aired far more than any contrary opinion. Check the Letters to the Editor column in America’s most influential newspoapers abd magazines. Sputtering liberals show up there every day. Usually, they are flashing their anger in defense of their latest Cause Du Jour. This season the cause is illegal immigration. Only liberals, in their fury, just shorten it to “immigration.” This noteworthy Letter to the Editor appeared on Monday in the Long Beach Press Telegram: “To all the white Americans complaining about illegal immigrants: Unless you are of native Indian descent, you are all immigrants. Everything we call the United States was stolen from native peoples, and California, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and parts of Utah, Colorado and Oregon were all stolen a second time from Mexico. This land is, by rights, ours, not yours. John D. Tecumseh, Long Beach.” This kind of creative reasoning is helpful in understanding why liberals have lost two of every three Presidential elections since the new Republican Party put up a Mr. Lincoln in the 1860 race. Will someone in the room please explain to the letter-writer and to other liberals that when, say, you lose a game of poker, you may not claim victory because the deck of playing cards belongs to you? The country was not stolen from Indians, Mr. Tecumseh. Indians lost the war, sir, fairly lopsidedly. No recount was warranted — even if early-day Democrats were including the votes of dead men that long ago.

Postscript

As our car approached Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon, 93.7, the classical music station, bobbed up on the dial. Happily, the station began its celebration of the 4th of July early. They cut away from strictly classical to cue up the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing spirited arrangements of favorite patriotic melodies. At last, I smiled, an oasis where we could tap our toes, smile and breathe freely. Behind me, an angry liberal was furiously honking for me to get out of his way. If he had just tuned in to the uplifting patriotic music of 93.7, he would have been too busy to notice that we were already traveling well above the speed limit.
