South American Rhythms
Direct from their native Buenos Aires comes the five-member Los Pinguos (The Penguins).
Latin rhythms and Argentine rock are their specialties.
But a closer look shows that they delve into a far wider range, a mixture of Latin rhythms, salsa, flamenco, reggae, rumba, Argentine rock and sambas that are performed with Spanish guitars, a Cuban Tres, Peruvian cajon (box-drum) and harmonizing vocals.
Free underground parking is available at City Hall.
Downtown has blossomed so strongly during the years of the summer concert series that no fewer than 23 nearby restaurants are available before and after the performances.
Here are the 3 remaining Thursday night concerts, all starting at 7 oclock:
Aug. 16 The John Jorgenson Quintet presents swingin gypsy jazz, featuring the sounds of a hot viola and upright bass.
Aug. 23 This is the week of the 55th Fiesta La Ballona, and the Courtyard will be rocking with the popular Ricardo Lemo and Makina Loca Afro-Cuban with a touch of salsa.
Aug. 30 Closing Night, the Thursday before Labor Day, will spotlight another popular return attraction, the rock, blues, jazz, Cajun and country tones of the Carl Verheyen Band.
