Look What the Mails Brought

Two days before the election, I received a flyer in the mail proclaiming that we should dump Ed Little from the Water Board. The flyer suggested Mr. Little was part of a corrupt Water Board team that squandered taxpayer money and accepted bribes. “Two Water Board members have been convicted of bribery and other Board policy abuses.” The flyer forgot to mention that the two members convicted of bribery were Democrats. Mr. Little is a Republican. I tried in vain to find out who mailed me the flyer. It was pointed out to me that in the upper left hand corner, in the smallest possible print (white, against a yellow background, making it virtually illegible) are the words, “Paul Koretz for Water Board,” followed by a downtown Los Angeles address.

I am friends of both Ed Little and Ken Lock. They are honorable gentlemen. I had endorsed Mr. Little before I knew Ken was running. Had I known Ken was running, I might have refrained from endorsing anybody. I was told that Mr. Koretz is a nice person by an someone who shook his head in disbelief when he saw the flyer.

Postscript

One way to escape this silliness might be to end term limits for politicians in exchange for redrawing district lines to create genuinely competitive districts. This would encourage a true exchange of ideas on how to solve problems in instead of hurling accusations and nasty sound bites.
