Although admission is free, those who are interested in supporting the Julian Dixon Library financially will have plenty of opportunities.

A small donation will get you a safari adventure perform-along fun-pack to use during the movie, fresh popcorn and a “Bookie Buck” (redeemable for one gently-used book at the event or at any subsequent Friends of the Library book sale).

The Friends are also offering fun safari-themed items for purchase or auction, ranging from small souvenirs to a Catalina adventure cruise and a dinner for six at the Culver City Fire Dept.

Eat Somebody Else’s Food

There is no need to pack a picnic because the Friends will be selling beverages, submarine sandwiches, chips and desserts. Be sure to bring cash or a checkbook (no credit cards, please), since the raffle tickets, souvenirs, food and auction items are going to be tempting.

The theme for the day will be wild animals and safari adventure.

The movie is based on “Born Free: A Lioness of Two Worlds,” the true-life, international bestselling book written by Joy Adamson about herself, her game warden husband, George Adamson, and Elsa, the orphaned cub lioness they raised while living in Kenya.

Let the Music Begin

Dozens of volunteers will be providing games, prizes and live music starting at 5:30.

Everyone is invited to dress up as his or her favorite animal or don a safari costume and then join in the costume parade (at 7 o’clock).

For those without a costume, safari hats and other theme costume items will be available for purchase as well.

The audience is invited to bring a camera and take pictures with Elsa the lioness and her safari friends.

Look Where They Are From

Look for the Nairobi Fire Dept. (known the rest of the year as the Culver City Fire Dept.) to be on hand, volunteering at the event and handing out popcorn.

Fire Capt. Bill Heins will be the emcee for the evening, and local musicians Muriel Clark and Ronnie Jayne will entertain.

Just as in the old days of drive-in theatres, the movie screening will follow once the sun goes down.

Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and something warm to wear after the sun goes down.

Culver City Reads Program

This event is made possible the sponsors of the summer-long Culver City Reads program, which encourages youngsters to read (listed at www.ccfol.org). The Friends are especially grateful to Lion Level ($10,000) Sponsor Sony Pictures Entertainment, Elephant Level ($5,000) Sponsors Culver City News and AT&T and Rhinoceros Level ($1,000) Sponsors, Culver City Fire Management Group and Firefighters Assn., Dave and Diana Hauptman, EcoStation and the STAR Education Foundation, Jin’s Valero Service (Jin Kwak), Ronnie Jayne Music, A Song for You Productions, Albert and Ursula Vera (Sorrento Market), Symantec Corp., and Uncle Milton Industries.

From start to finish, this will be an old-fashioned fun-for-the-family evening.
