[Editor’s Note: In an effort to present campaign news impartially, here are not necessarily impartial reports from each principal’s camp in the race for Los Angeles City Attorney, leading up to the March 5 primary, 32 days away.]

Incumbent City Attorney Carmen (Nuch) Trutanich’s lead over his nearest rival in the race to March 5 has widened to 10 points, according to a SurveyUSA poll commissioned by KABC-TV.

The poll shows Mr. Trutanich with an 29 percent to 19 percent lead over termed-out former state Assemblyman Mike Feuer. Two weeks ago, the same poll showed Mr. Trutanich with a 6-point lead (27 to 21 percent) over Mr. Feuer.

“This is a great sign of momentum for Trutanich,” said Rick Taylor, Mr. Trutanich’s chief strategist. “As voters begin to focus on this race, the evidence is clear: City Attorney Trutanich’s record as an independent city attorney, with a winning record of protecting the vulnerable, the taxpayer and our neighborhoods, is resonating with the electorate.”

Here’s the link to the SurveyUSA poll results.

Mr. Trutanich is now a 4-for-4 winner in published polls. The results of four polls testing voter preferences in the city attorney’s race have been published (two by SurveyUSA, one by Loyola Marymount University’s School for the Study of Los Angeles and one by the Trutanich campaign) and each time, Mr. Trutanich has come out on top.

“Sometimes candidates like to boast about all their endorsements and the size of their campaign war chests,” said Mr. Taylor. “But that doesn’t amount to a hill of beans unless you’ve got the voters on your side. That’s what the Trutanich campaign has going for it.”

Here’s a link to Trutanich’s accomplishments and a snapshot of his positions on issues facing the City Attorney as they appear on League of Women Voters* Smart Voter website.

From Another Perspective

Dave Jacobson, communications specialist for Mr. Feuer, tells quite a different story this afternoon. He asserts:

“College Democrats believe Mike Feuer is the best choice to help keep their campuses safe.”
With less than five weeks left before the primary Election, Mike Feuer has continued to pick up steam. Today’s endorsement from the UCLA Bruin Democrats adds to Mr. Feuer’s growing momentum in his City Attorney bid.

This endorsement comes on the heels of Mr. Feuer’s endorsements earlier this week from the 40,000 classroom teachers of the United Teachers Los Angeles as well as 800 grassroots citizen endorsers and 13 Neighborhood Council Presidents.

“Beyond his Democratic credentials, we strongly believe that Mike Feuer is by far the best candidate to help keep schools, college campuses and their neighborhoods safe,” said  Liz Friedman, President of UCLA Bruin Democrats. “Mike has been a leader in the fight to curb gun violence, to enhance public safety and to improve residents’ quality of life. We plan to do everything we can to make sure he wins this race.”

“The Bruin Dems are known for their ability to mobilize and turn students out to vote,” said Mr. Feuer. “In the primary election, every vote is going to count. Having the Bruin Dems help get my message out to UCLA students and having their critical volunteer support in reaching out to voters across the city is very valuable.”

Mr. Feuer has won endorsements from
17 other local grassroots Democratic Clubs. He also has been endorsed by the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.
