We had a great turnout last night for our Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Information and Orientation meeting.

Over 200 new and returning students and parents came to the orientation.

Though it's mostly aimed to introduce new families to our program, the meeting also gives an overview of this year's plans for each department.

We explained the structure of the program and how we are supported.

I emphasized that though we do have support from various foundations and grants, and of course Sony Pictures Entertainment, parents themselves are the biggest sponsor of AVPA.

They raise the most funds for the program, as well as volunteering time, energy and resources. There is a great group of enthusiastic parents and students coming in with the ninth grade class.

We are very excited to see some increased preparation in the Middle School, especially in theatre and music.

Auditions and interviews for each department are scheduled for next week. Classes will start on Monday, Sept. 17. We'll have our first convocation meeting with all the AVPA students on Wednesday, Sept 19. That is when we'll take our annual group photo of the whole program membership.

Our production flyer for the season may be seen below. More events will be added as they are scheduled, but this will give you an idea of this year's events.

We have Jill Novick taking over as Creative Director of Theatre. Justin Lujan, who was Creative Director last year, still is on the faculty. He will be directing the fall production of “Our Town.” We are very happy to have a full-time teacher at Culver High as the head of the theatre program.

W will have a more extensive look at the year in our first newsletter, which will come out by the first of October.
