At the request of the defense, the trial of Fire Station murder suspect Myron DeShun Grant, scheduled to start early next month, has been delayed four more weeks.
Public defender Robert Conley told Superior Court Judge James R. Dabney this morning that he recently had received a large bundle of Mr. Grant’s recorded jailhouse telephone conversations that required further time and intense scrutiny.
The July 9 starting date was tentatively shifted to Thursday, Aug. 16, as they played hopscotch among planned vacation dates for several principals.
Outside the courtroom, Mr. Conley elaborated on the reason for postponement. The prosecution “gave us a tremendous number of recordings, every time he has ever said anything on the telephone. We are going to have to go through probably a hundred. So far, I have reviewed 31.”
Mr. Grant, who has three felony convictions in his young life, is accused of killing 45-year-old Paul Bilodeau, City Hall on-site construction consultant for Fire Station No. 3, Fox Hills, early on the evening of Friday, Jan. 2, ’09. At his desk after-hours in his construction trailer, as was his wont, Mr. Bilodeau, obscured from view, was shot to death.
However, he was not robbed.
The only personal possession believed to have been taken was his cellphone.
When it was pawned a year later by a member of the Grant family, according to police, the trail led authorities weeks later to Mr. Grant, already behind bars at the time on an unrelated charge.
The killing of Mr. Bilodeau remains a case of mystery and enigma. No motivation is in sight, among other key missing plot pieces.
