A rare astronomical event, the Transit of Venus, will occur on Tuesday afternoon when Venus moves between the earth and the sun.

In Los Angeles, this will be visible between 3:06 p.m. and 8 p.m.

One of the reasons why this Transit of Venus is a must to observe:

The next one will be in 105 years, 2117.

The last one visible in Los Angeles was in 1882.

Our Astrocan telescope allows indirect viewing. Charley and I will set it up in Veteran’s Park in Culver City, as we did last month for the Annular Solar Eclipse. Come on by to join us as we view it.

Veteran’s Park near Barman Ave. behind the swimming pool from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Regarding eye safety concerns for watching the Transit of Venus and eclipses:

You need to protect your eyes. A Mylar filter specifically made for solar viewing is the best thing to use. Don’t depend on sunglasses or smoked glass.
