Re “What UPCC Stands for

[Editor’s Note: The President of the Teachers Union was asked his opinion this morning of the recently-formed parents union.]

I am happy to see parents get involved.

I am not sure how this group will interface with the PTA and site booster clubs. But parent involvement is a good thing.

I have already contacted them and asked if I could come and make a presentation on the comparison data regarding employee compensation from the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

I think parents need to know that teachers, psychologists, counselors, nurses and administrators are underpaid when compared with the other 46 districts in the County. If this parent group decides that being able to attract and keep the best school employees is a worthy goal, maybe they can push the School Board in that direction.

I know several good teachers who are actively seeking jobs elsewhere. At some point, you have to be competitive in compensation if you wish to remain competitive in the services you provide to kids.
