Mayor Mehaul O'Leary is the first of the six City Council candidates to win environment group endorsement for the April 10 election.
Based on his environmental record, the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (an affiliate group in the liberal wing of the national Democratic party) endorses Mr. O'Leary for re-election.
In this endorsement based upon Mr. O'Leary's environmental accomplishments, the Los Angeles group waived three-quarters of its normal four-part procedure – questionnaire submission, evaluation and in-person interview.
The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters, formed in 1976, is the only environmental Political Action Committee (PAC) in Los Angeles County. The mission of the League of Conservation Voters is to participate in the electoral process throughout the County of Los Angeles from an environmental perspective. The League has a longstanding record of successfully electing environmental leaders and supporting environmentally minded ballot initiatives throughout Los Angeles County.
In addition to its endorsement, the League can provide additional financial support to candidates in cities with critical environmental issues.
In their 2008 endorsement of then-candidate O'Leary, the League stated: that
“Mehaul O'Leary first ran in the 2006 Council race, coming in third for two available positions that year. Mehaul has been using green living principles at his Joxer Daly’s Irish Pub and Restaurant by recycling cooking oil and charging customers extra if they want plastic bags.
“Mehaul hopes to use his business experience to find creative solutions to protect Culver City’s historic character, invest in more recreational and green space for residents, and turn Ballona Creek into a five-mile environmental and economic green belt for Culver City residents and businesses.”
