As the newest and least community-known candidate in the crowded field for City Council seats, Stephen Murray carries with him at all times a copy of the city’s budget.

“I have been thinking about and looking at ways to save money,” he says while preparing for a major coming-out, tonight’s Democratic Club Candidates Forum, 7 o’clock, at the Senior Center.

“It is quite challenging when you consider the city has over 600 employees. I am trying to find out where things happen, and you’re looking for where it is easier to go before turning to the hard cuts.

“One of the things I am focusing on is, the current Council has not made the hard cuts it needed to make. The deficit they have been running started around the time they got into office (four years ago), and it has been growing.

“There was a little downward turn this last year. But they have not made the bold cuts they need to make.

“They are running on a platform of experience. But with the deficit they are running, I don’t know if Culver City can afford their experience.”

Is Mr. Murray concerned about making a favorable impression with tonight’s Democratic crowd?

Since the moderated forum is very formulaic, Mr. Murray said that he plans to work the room “and meet as many people as I can.”

He said there are “so many” compelling reasons to endorse him and vote for him:

“My drive and desire to bring about responsibility. I feel like I will take action where the incumbents have failed to take action ”
