My wife and I went out on New Year’s Day to a favorite restaurant of ours. When we found it extremely busy, we decided to sit at the bar. Two spaces were available but a couple separated them.

We asked if they would mind moving up one seat to allow us to sit together. To my surprise, they looked and said “No, we will be done soon. Then you can have the seats.” They sat for more than 15 minutes knowing we were waiting. They no longer were eating, ordering or drinking.

I was amazed at the rudeness the couple displayed.

At times my wife and I have moved one space left or right to allow a couple to sit together. What a nice way for this couple to start their new year, rude and noncaring.

Earlier that day, when my wife returned from a short trip to Lancaster, she was upset. After losing her cell phone in Lancaster, she had to buy a new one. When she arrived home, she looked up the IMac program “Find my Phone.” The phone was located in a home in Los Angeles 80 miles from where my wife had lost it!

Using Google maps, we found the house, drove there and spoke with the owner. She told us her brother had found the phone. She called him and we arranged to meet in 20 minutes.

Happy Ending

He went out of his way to meet us. My wife was extremely grateful. She offered him $40 for the inconvenience we had put him through to meet up. He absolutely refused the money, saying it was his pleasure. He wished us a happy new year and was gone.

In one day we experienced the good and the bad people have to offer.

Which one are you? Would you have moved one way or another when asked? Would you have gone out of your way to deliver a cell phone to someone you did not know?

It started me thinking about how each of us is brought up.

We are taught to believe we are raised in the right environment, that all others are different, that our lifestyle is the right one.

When you were a child and visited someone else’s home for the first time, were you surprised other families did things differently?
