How Much Will Secret Meeting Cost the District?

Last week, I wrote a letter to the editor commenting about Culver City School Board members Karlo Silbiger and Nancy Goldberg meeting privately with a person who was suing the School District. I couldn’t believe that our elected School Board members would be so ignorant. Apparently, I was not the only one.

When I wrote, I never expected to have so many people email me their thoughts. Here are a few.

Mark W. said: “Nancy Goldberg is new, so you can cut her some slack. Karlo Silbiger should know better. Someone needs to tell that boy he should look after the School Board, not his own political career.”

Rob N. wrote: “Mark Twain said, ‘In the first place, God made idiots. This was for practice. Then he made School Boards.’ Mark Twain died in 1910, so he couldn’t have met Karlo Silbiger, could he?”

Nancy L. said: “I never thought that anyone could make me miss [Stew] Bubar and [Marla] Wolkowitz. Then along came Silbiger and Goldberg.”

Cindy G. said: “Stupid is as stupid does.”

I never did hear from Mr. Silbiger or Ms. Goldberg. I never received an explanation as to why these two elected officials thought it was okay to meet with someone suing the School District. When given the chance on the televised School Board meeting, both remained silent about their actions. If it weren’t for Kathy Paspalis, we never would have known about the meeting.

Mr. Silbiger talks about transparency. Is transparency only good when it favors something he wants?

When Karlo Silbiger screws up, is transparency no longer an important factor? Tell me that we aren’t stuck with another Gary Silbiger, only younger and with less hair?

I dislike lawyers as much as the next guy. Sometimes, though, they are necessary. If the saying, “A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client,” is true, what do we say about two fools who think that they know more than the lawyers. Just because Mr. Silbiger’s father is a lawyer, it doesn’t mean he knows a thing about the law. Based upon his secret meeting with the person suing the District, it is obvious that Mr. Silbiger knows nothing about the law or common sense.

It will be interesting to learn what damage Mr. Silbiger and Ms. Goldberg have done to the District with their stupidity. How big a check is the District going to have to write? How much more will he cost the District?
