My Favorite Sandwich

First, the bread. Have you ever tried squaw bread? Whole Foods sells it under the brand name “Sun Flour.” Its special characteristic is that it's not too soft. In fact, it's a bit chewy. It's dark bread made with wheat flour, molasses, oat bran, rye flour, and brown sugar, among other things. Ready. Okay, lay two slices of bread on a big plate.

We Happy Now

My wife and I were fortunate enough to babysit our 3-year-old grandson, “Spike,” who lives across the country, for 5 wonderful days. Being woken by Spike each morning at about 5:40 was a blessing. Tired as my wife and I were, seeing him and hearing his “Hi, Grandpa – Hi, Grandma” was music to our ears. Then one of us would take Spike downstairs to play “cars-and- trucks,” while the other of us went back to sleep for awhile.

Family Historian — and Why

Starting with the “Whys”

I think of it as the “need” to pass on the records of my family so that future generations will remember and will get to know those who came before. I must admit, I wish to be remembered as the knight who carries the holy grail of family memories into at least a few generations to come.

Not Just Any Student

The other day I got a phone call from a former student.

Not just any student, but one that I shall never forget.

Appreciation

From the quiet of my above-ground pool this evening, I looked into the sky and, in my mind’s eye, I saw an answer to the world’s problems.

It opened just over a week ago. I’ve been there four times since then.

Our new Whole Foods market in town is amazing.
