I was driving home from our airport yesterday in my wife’s car when it happened. I received a phone call from Kaiser that I thought I had better answer. It was only the scheduling office asking me to decide on an appointment time. The damage, though, had been done. I had picked up my cell phone from its mounting on … Read More
Tax Time Fun?
Okay. I goofed two years ago when I overlooked a letter from my pension plan. How interesting and nice of my pension plan it was, I thought, that I got an increase in my take-home pay. Duh. Our taxman calculated that I owed the government some $6000 in taxes at the year’s end. I paid off the IRS, and surmised … Read More
No Dog, No Air Fryer
That’s right, if my wife cannot have a dog, I cannot get an air fryer machine. Why can’t she have a dog? Because I don’t want to take care of it. But she says …
Aliens to the Rescue
In “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” aliens visit us to keep us from killing ourselves. I would love to see that day come during my lifetime. But I guess it's okay if it comes before the earth is destroyed. In my prayers, I pray that all those who value death more than life, will see the value of life over death. Since I don't believe this will happen any day soon, I will leave it up to …
Cara Cara Heaven
It all began on our trip to Florida last week. We stayed with friends who taught us how to bird watch, and how to squeeze fresh orange juice with their machine. Their deliciously sweet reddish oranges were said to have low acidity. When we got home my wife and I ordered an orange juicer from Amazon, and we …
Who Needs Coconut Milk Anyway?
When I began my ice cream hobby two months ago, I was so excited about using coconut milk in my homemade nondairy ice creams that I ordered a box of 12 bags of raw coconut flakes so I could make my own coconut milk. I bought cheesecloth and a nut bag to wring out the remaining coconut milk from the flakes. I was making ice creams one after the other with …
Applause Please
If there is one movie a year I really like, that's great. This year there were four. How do I know I like a movie? Not by the reviews, not by what others say, not by the actors. Besides knowing that I'm enjoying a movie while I'm watching it, I know I really liked a movie if, at the end, I catch myself applauding, and often cheering loudly. Here are the films that made me applaud this year –- just in time for the Oscar nominations.
‘Charidy?’ I Don't Think So
Have you heard of the organization “Charidy?” I did today for the first time. I received an email from an organization I like to support. The organization I support is using the “expertise” of the Charidy website to raise a large sum of money. The idea is that …
A Sweet Start to Our New Year
For two weeks now I have been making dairy-free, coconut-milk-based, ice cream recipes, enjoying the different flavors: Pistachio, chocolate, vanilla, cherry, blueberry, strawberry, butter pecan, Swiss almond, coffee, maple walnut. This afternoon I decided to go creative. I made my first unique recipe, and I wrote it down. Tonight when I tasted my first invention, I went bonkers.
A New Year’s Transition
A transition is taking place this New Year, and I expect it to be a happy one. After 25 years with LAUSD, my wife is retiring. She will continue to go to her favorite activities, such as yoga, and the gym. She will expand her horizons and find other things to do. I am happy for her. While she is doing her activities, I will be …
