Drenched but Still Smiling and Grateful

ShacharOP-ED

Dateline Jerusalem — It was one of those days, and nights. I boarded the bus for the long schlep to work in Jerusalem. Three blocks
later, my bus was in an accident with another bus.

Look What Israel Has Given to the World

ShacharOP-ED

Dateline Jerusalem — In this modern era, the world takes for granted so many medical discoveries and technological inventions. It is almost hard to keep up with all these innovations.

Going Up and Down, I Feel So Confined

ShacharOP-ED

Dateline Jerusalem — I met my very quiet next-door neighbors for the first time this morning, after a period of three years. We were running out of our apartments before 6:30 (the usual time I leave for work) to catch the broken elevator on the next floor down.

Disneyland Is Right. In Israel, It Really Is a Small World

ShacharOP-ED

Dateline Jerusalem — To quote the Disneyland ride of my youth, “It's a small world.” And, it is even smaller if you live in Israel. This tiny nation, only 62 years young, no larger than the
state of New Jersey, 1/20th the size of California, with a population of approximately
seven million, seems to be the nexus that connects the world, or at least my world.

Riding Home Every Night Amongst Twinkling Stars

ShacharOP-ED

Dateline Jerusalem — This week I returned to work after almost three months off for injuries. Although a 4½-hour daily round-trip commute to Jerusalem via four buses and two trains, the ride is comfortable and scenic.

A History Lesson on Chanukah, Which Starts on Wednesday

ShacharOP-ED

Dateline Jerusalem — A famous Jewish saying, “They tried to kill us, we won, let's eat,” is an appropriate description of the holiday of Chanukah that begins Wednesday, as well as describing most holidays and celebrations in Israel. The eating part always involves symbolic foods.

A Lesson in Good — No, Fabulous — Taste

ShacharOP-ED

Dateline Jerusalem — If you have never had a Krembo, you are missing out on a taste delight. It is one of Israel's most famous and delicious snacks/desserts, only available in the winter, from October to February.

It Appeals So Strongly to Me

ShacharOP-ED

Dateline Jerusalem — The main street of my city reminds me of a small town. Yet the population is just under 120,000 people, and it is considered one of the larger cities in Israel. The main street is lined with orange trees whose scent permeates the air, a variety of palm trees, and my favorite tree that looks as if it belongs in Hawaii's fern grotto. The main street also hosts hundreds of small shops, bakeries, boutiques, sidewalk cafes, and enough shoe stores to make Imelda Marcos a very happy woman.

The Trouble with My Head — in Time of Peril

ShacharOP-ED

Dateline Jerusalem — On occasion I have been told I have a big head, but I am not really conceited. I have also been told that I am a fathead, but I am not really stubborn.
