You May Be Surprised How Much Is Under Your Control

Nicholas PollakOP-ED

I was at dinner with my wife in Cancun  – on vacation – when my phone rang. A man named Joe said he wanted to make an appointment, but first he had questions before he finalized his choice of a hypnotherapist.

When I knew I had established a rapport, I told the gentleman I was on vacation in Cancun.  Would he like to make an appointment for a time after I had returned to Los Angeles?

I was surprised later when Joe said he chose me because of my confidence.

In session, he said the deciding factor was that I had enough self-confidence to travel to Cancun on my own. I probably should have corrected him. I was with my wife. But I remembered that at the age of 15, with the English equivalent of $50, I traveled through Europe for three months.  I did it again at 17 and 19, going on to Israel, Australia and finally the United States. I had the self-confidence to want to do this traveling, never thinking it would be other than positive and fun-filled.  I was a naïve, optimistic Londoner, curious to see the places I had seen in the movies, on television and in books.

I had known quite awhile I wanted to travel. But first, I had to earn the money and gain my parents permission. I worked three jobs to earn traveling costs. I had struck a deal with my father. When I could demonstrate the responsibility at a part-time job to earn the money, he would let me go. I did not quit until I gained what I wanted. I worked two months, traveled two months. If I found work on the road, I would stay longer.

Sit Down and Stay Awhile

Now as I look back, to my surprise I spent two years in Israel, 10 in Australia and 30 in the USA. I guess I am still on vacation.

I was reluctant to recognize I had done everything I set out to achieve. I had the kind of experiences most of us want. Sadness and tears, fear and sacrifice, adventure, romance, love and prosperity, all that we see in movies.

You never know where life will take you. Are you where you want to be? Do you have the relationship you want?

Why not?

What went wrong?

What turned you away from what you wanted to do?

Were those things truly the things that gave you the success happiness and prosperity you wanted. Do you have someone to love? Something to look forward to?

Change Requires Just a Nudge

If our circumstances were changed in the smallest amount, we would not be where we are today. Any decision you ever faced, a slight twist of circumstances, and who knows? Anything can change at any time.

What if you had turned left instead of right? How different would we want our lives to be?

Would we want to have learned a moneymaking skill? Something financially less rewarding but more satisfying to the inner soul?

Remember, now you are a success.

I heard a Los Angeles deejay reply, when asked how he was, “Not as good as some, better than most.”

That is valid, a truism for all of us. Once we began making our own decisions, we became responsible for our actions.  Merely getting out of bed can be a difficult for some. We take for granted what we do on a daily basis.

Acknowledge how much you have learned and have applied as you continually build life experiences.

We have the ability to be what we want to be. All we need is to know what that is, plan the strategy to get there and work the plan.

You alone create the circumstances you want for your life.

Seize the day. Make your subconscious work for you to create the prosperity you want.
