Solving the Mysterious Reluctance of 12-Year-Old Straight ‘A’ Student

Nicholas PollakOP-ED

The mother of a 12-year-old boy called to ask if I would see children, and whether she could sit in.

I cautioned her that sometimes it was best to not to witness session because it can inhibit a child. When she stepped out, I would ensure that the child was telling me everything without fear of offending a parent or getting into trouble.

At school time each morning, the boy would cry and beg not to go. The puzzle was why? He had many friends, was an “A” student, a good athlete and he was not being bullied. Psychiatrists, acupuncturists, medical practitioners and nutritionists have seen him, but without improvement.

The boy’s mother called me out of desperation.

For problems like quitting smoking, losing weight, insomnia, motivation and improving memory, persons will pick hypnotherapy as their primary problem solver. For issues such as eliminating chronic pain, panic and anxiety, clients choose hypnotherapy only because none of the other modalities worked.

Skeptics Are Seeing Truth

I have seen two clients in the past three months for panic and anxiety. Both spent 18 months in group sessions at UCLA. Result: Zero. In hypnotherapy, their issues were resolved in a short six-session period.

Recently I received an article from a chiropractor friend clearly showing that hospitals and other medical facilities are discovering the value of hypnosis. The results are amazing. The Chiropractic Assn. of America is coming around, too.

Returning to my story, when the mother and son showed up, I could see this was a bright kid, nervous, with low self-esteem. This was odd considering his success at school.

After talking with the boy, it seems his crying fits started a year ago when his grandmother died. They had been very close. Consoled by his parents, he appeared to recover. Once the crying began, though, it could not be stopped. What the parents did not understand was that he was so terrified that one of his parents might die while he was at school, he did not want that to happen. The best preventative: Stay home with his mother.

Cause Rises to Surface

We had a long conversation about life and death. By the end, he was in a much better place. He realized whatever was going to happen, would, that he was best served by continuing his regular routine, knowing his parents were there for him.

I hypnotized him to help his self-esteem as well and to give him positive imagery of being at school. Within a few sessions he was his old healthy self, enjoying school and friends. He alone was responsible for his attitudinal turnaround.

I tell every client, “I cannot make the changes for you. If you follow the suggestions I offer, quickly, without thinking too long, you will achieve the desired results.”

As a hypnotist, I help a client to create his/her own hypnotic state. Eventually they learn to form their own hypnotic state. Once they understand how hypnosis works, they become used to the self-hypnosis, and changes start to occur. They change their mindset from accepting the same old behaviors the subconscious gives them to programming the subconscious to give them the behaviors they want.
