Re “A Closer Look at Sgt. Ansman, Killer”
[Editor’s Note: In May 2009, Sgt. Scott Ansman, former National Guard member, was sentenced to life in prison for the Aug. 24, 2007, murder of Joanne Crystal Harris and her unborn child at the Culver City Armory.]
Last month a former aide to convicted killer National Guard Sgt. Scott Ansman stepped out after 10 years to illumine some details about the man who committed the gory homicide.
In the first installment, the gentleman known as Mr. Camp spoke of his admiration for his military boss – until one day. Mr. Camp learned that Sgt. Ansman, who had become his friend, too, had lied to his superiors about the contours of his combat experience.
“When I found that out, it bothered me a lot,” said Mr. Camp. Because, me and this man, he had taught me a lot. He always went to bat for me. He tried to get me promoted. I was kind of struggling financially. He helped me get on state active duty.
“So I was at the Armory a lot.
“At that time, we had the cold-weather homeless shelter (at the Culver City Armory) up there.
“That is where Joanne (Crystal Harris, Sgt. Ansman’s victim) and all these other women come into play.
“It wasn’t just Joanne” that the very married Sgt. Ansman was with. The now former Mrs. Ansman gave birth to their third child in June 2007, two months before her husband turned killer.
“I think it was an addiction that he had for women,” said Mr. Camp, “because it was so easy for him to get them. He was in a position of power. He had money.
“A lot of these women Sgt. Ansman was addicted to I the homeless shelter had issues.
“I remember him saying to me,” said Mr. Camp, “I just took her to Burger King, and now she is ready to” do whatever he wants.
