The eight-day Jewish holiday of Chanukah begins on Tuesday night, and the community is invited to the Chanukah Festival at 6 o’clock in Center Court at the Westfield Mall, Culver City.

Chocolate Chanukah gelt, dreidels, latkes, playdough, crafts and grand LED menorah lighting will be featured.

Known as the Festival of Lights, Chanukah celebrates the Jews’ military victory over the Greek-Syrian army in  the summer of 160 BCE, Before the Common Era. After defeating the Greeks and recapturing Jerusalem, and its Holy Temple, the Jewish warriors, led by the Maccabees, discovered only one cruse of oil for the Temple menorah (this one with seven branches, as the Torah commands). Although the oil was meant to last only for one day, it miraculously burned for eight, the amount of time necessary to produce a fresh batch of olive oil.
