A memorial service for Vince Motyl, one of Culver City’s favorite citizens, will be held Saturday morning at 10 at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
Widely recognized by his gravelly voice, Mr. Motyl was a familiar presence for years at every Culver City civic event of note.
The businessman was 75 years old when he died on Sept. 13 following surgery at Cedars-Sinai.
Debbie Catallin, Mr. Motyl’s daughter, was reflecting this week on her father’s campaign support for political candidates and for his No. 1 asset, loyalty.
One story regarded her cousin Phyllis and her father after Ms. Catallini’s mother Linda Motyl died in February 2015.
“Phyllis actually was my dad’s cousin, and after my mom passed, they became closer,” said Ms. Catallini. “They would talk a couple times a week. Phyllis would always tell him at the end, ‘I love you.’
“Finally one day she said to him, ‘Why don’t you ever say ‘I love you’ back?’
“My dad said, ‘Because the only person I ever said that to was my wife.’”
