Without drama or resistance, lights are green for the School District’s newest showcase.

The still-to-be designed two-story Science Building, behind the Middle School, alongside the lacrosse field, will serve Culver City High School and Middle School students.

Yellow caution lights changed to bright green when the School Board, with unanimous enthusiasm endorsed the ambitious project that will require about a year to complete.

“About” is the determinative term.

Interim Supt. Leslie Lockhart, at the helm since shortly after news of the Science Building went public in late spring, said it will take 9 to 12 months for the structure to be completed.

Because such events have a way of consuming the calendar, the Opening Day target is the fall of  2018 as opposed to the start of the school term.

Dream sketches of the Science Building do not exist.

First step is a trip to the architects to create its form.

Placement of the building has been a debate target, and Ms. Lockhart explained.

“The Science Building is behind the Middle School and the high school because it is easily accessible to our students of both schools – with the least disruption,” she said.

Gazing into the future:

“There is room — if needed — for a second building, and I am sure we will need it,” Ms. Lockhart said.

Delighted with the outcome of talks, the superintendent said, provisionally, “for now this is the perfect place for the Science Building.”
