Are Gays Disappearing from Hollywood?

Speeding past the rich irony of a gay organization being known by the acronym GLAAD, the media tracker for fairness to gays issued its 53rd consecutive unsurprising report last week.

In the painstakingly fair, starchly objective Los Angeles Times, reporter Tre’vell Anderson wrung his hands and observed dryly:

“Hollywood keeps getting it wrong when it comes to diverse and accurate portrayals of LGBTQ communities in film. A study released Thursday by LGBTQ media advocacy organization GLAAD finds that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people are ‘nearly invisible or outdated punchlines in big Hollywood movies.’”

Does anyone know what prejudiced point Tre’vell tra-la-la was making in the opening sense? He appears dizzily, not to mention easily, confused.

Wasn’t queer an insult a couple weeks ago?

Tre’vell tra-la-la helped us understand gay measurements. He said when GLAAD gladly evaluates films in quest of non-straight, non-whites, it inscrutably scrutinizes screenplays this way:

The Vito Russo Test

  • The film must contain a character that is identifiably lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer.
  • That character must not be solely or predominantly defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • The LGBTQ character must be tied into the plot in such a way that their removal would have significant effect, meaning they are not there simply to provide commentary, paint urban community or set up a punchline. The character must matter.

That somebody bothered to count last year’s 125 releases by the major film studios and detected detectable gays in a mere 18 percent tells us that the unemployment level among far-out liberals is in the 100 percent range.

Doesn’t anyone around here work?

In their unceasing hunt for unceasing diversity among the undeceased gays and Irish, only 20 percent of the non-mainstreamers were non-white. Only one transgender person appeared in a movie.

Evidently we are to conclude that the supposedly inclusive  birthplace of gay imagery in America prefers profits to cultural cacciatore.
