Will Capo d’Orlando join Culver City’s Sister City roster?

Mission accomplished – with a smile and with the confidence of success.

After 11 days in Capo d’Orlando, Sicily, a three-member official City Council delegation has returned home convinced that scenic seaside Capo qualifies as Culver City’s next Sister City.

Mayor Jeff Cooper, Vice Mayor Thomas Small and immediate past mayor Jim Clarke were joined on the European outing by the top two leaders of Culver City’s Sister City Committee, outgoing president Sonia Karroum and incoming president Nancy Perdom-Browning.

“I want to go back as soon as I can,” Mayor Cooper said not long after landing.

If Culver City and Capo d’Orlando are to become Sister Cities, it will be awhile. The Sister City Committee will make a recommendation to the City Council, and a vote will follow.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Small and Mr. Clarke will participate in the Sister City installation ceremonies on Wednesday, June 21. They will speak extensively about their inspection trip to the Sicilian resort.

“The best part of our trip,” said Mayor Cooper, “was learning about the people, their culture and the city.

“If you asked the most important part of becoming a Sister City, is the exchange of both children and adults.”

Mr. Clarke found the 11 days amazingly nutritious.

“Food and friendship, those were the best parts of the trip,” said the former Hizzoner.

“There was plenty of food, and they kept it coming.”

Dining one sunlit day in a restaurant overlooking Capo d’Orlando bay, the Culver City visitors were treated to a seven-course meal. “It lasted 2½ hours,” said Mr. Clarke, “and that was just for lunch.”

No wonder he is making a return visit in November.

As for business, the Cooper-Small-Clarke triumvirate met with the Capo d’Orlando mayor and his staff.

“We tried to put some shape to what a Sister City exchange might look like,” Mr. Clarke said.

That will be decided in the coming months.
