The four remaining members of the School Board will not have to surrender much of their precious time deciding on a fifth member.

Following last week’s resignation announcement by Board President Sue Robins, there has been something less than an avalanche of applications.

With merely a week and a half window for candidates to beat Friday afternoon’s deadline, School District secretary Rebecca Williams has fielded a mere three applications.

The School Board will name a successor to Ms. Robins – for a 20-month term — at next Tuesday evening’s meeting.

Perhaps the most prominent and most emphatic non-candidate is Scott McVarish who finished just out of the money in the last election, November 2015.

In issuing a decline-to-run statement, Mr. McVarish nevertheless profiled qualifications for the emergency candidate.

By way of context, it should be noted that the astute Mr. McVarish is an immigration attorney.

He said:

“Due to President Trump’s disastrous policies, I’m just too busy to serve on the School Board right now. It would be unfair to my staff and a disservice to our clients who are impacted by his policies. I trust the School Board will not simply select a super-volunteer. Our kids need someone with practical ideas on how to serve high school students who are not college-bound and to further improve the Middle School.”
