Dateline Dayton — Last Thursday and Saturday, I helped my friend Dan with his garage sale. As I mentioned last week, I contributed a few items to the sale. I moved some of my smalls, but only one large item sold.

Thankfully, I was able to unload the large bookcase that belonged to Pauline’s brother, who died recently.

Even with my limited sales, it was fun working Dan’s sale. He generates a fair amount of traffic with his unusual inventory.

To have a successful event, you must promote. Dan always has placed his own ads. But this time it was a plat sale, and someone else took care of the advertising.

No ad was placed in the Dayton Daily News. Even when we are surrounded by electronic media, print newspapers are still important.

Our daughter Darlene and her family, except for husband Mike, arrived Friday for a wedding. We had supper together Friday evening and they left early Sunday morning, because Emily had to be back at school.

After supper Friday, even though it was raining, granddaughter Heather and I went to a Dayton Dragons baseball game.

Getting wet, we watched ducks play on the tarp for an hour and then left. The game finally did get canceled.

Our son Bill, who lives in Cincinnati, was to visit Sunday. But their daughter Madi had a rescheduled soccer match. We made arrangements to meet them at the field, after touring a condo in our development. The arrangement was, after the match, we would go out to eat. Turned out Madi had a school project to finish and they couldn’t go. Hmmm. That was the same excuse they used after her concert a few ago I suggested we schedule our visit for another day when they would have more time. We spent the afternoon doing errands.

Pauline played cards with her friends last Monday, and in the evening we were at the ballpark for another Dragons game.
Even though many fans gave up, we stayed until the Dragons lost in the 10th inning.

Granddaughter Madison graduated from the eighth grade on Tuesday, a nice ceremony. Academically, she did well, receiving first honors and placing third in a math competition.

We were in Tipp City yesterday for my classmate’s funeral. Bob was a great guy, both in school and throughout his many years with Fifth Third Bank. After the service we went to the cemetery in Piqua to plant flowers and do cleanup work at the gravesites.

I wonder who will do this once we are gone?

Last evening my sister joined Pauline and me for a delicious pork sandwich in Covington.
