Rick Hudson

After months of wrangling, this evening’s 7 o’clock City Council meeting could be the occasion when volunteer baseball coaching hero the late Rick Hudson has a baseball diamond named for him.

At this hour, there appears to be a 50-50 chance that a field at Bill Botts Field will be designated to honor Mr. Hudson, who died 18 months ago.

Mayor Mehaul O’Leary has announced his support for Hudson Field.

Councilman Jeff Cooper is believed to be of the same mind.

Obtaining a third vote from Vice Mayor Andy Weissman and Councilpersons Meghan Sahli-Wells or Jim Clarke seems like a safe bet.

At that same late-in-the-agenda line is a proposal to name the City Hall Courtyard for Dale Jones.

One of the best-liked City Hall-types in modern times, the late Mr. Jones was Culver City’s Chief Administrative Officer from the 1970s until the early ‘90s.

Upon retirement, he moved to Arizona where he died last year.

On another hand, memories of popular personalities fade.

Critics of City Hall namings note that Mr. Weissman is the only contemporary Council member who met and knew Mr. Jones.
