Appreciation

Robert EbsenOP-ED

From the quiet of my above-ground pool this evening, I looked into the sky and, in my mind’s eye, I saw an answer to the world’s problems.

I saw an image of mankind — a speck in the vastness of it all. I believed that all man has to do is accept that vastness.

In the span of our very short lives here on planet Earth, how many of us spend much time pondering the meaning of life?

If we all accepted the fact that we are but a small part of the vastness – of the vast Plan, if you will – we might give more credence to the feelings of others, realizing that we are special to be a part of the vastness. Another way to look at it: If we are here – and we likely ARE – then we are part of that Plan. Although we are mostly mired in our everyday thoughts and activities, we can allow ourselves to feel quite special.

But what if we don’t accept that there is a Plan. Many believe that Chance is all that operating here. Okay. But there is still that vastness out there. By Chance, there should be other colonies of living forms out there. We are still special to be “ignited” into our living form by Chance.

Chance vs. Plan. Perhaps it doesn’t really matter. We are here. We are but a speck in the vastness. Ergo, we are special. Our “specialness” should be reflected in our actions toward one another.

Why? Why not try to get “all the rings” while we’re here, and the heck with everyone else? Because of the vastness. Because, whether by Plan or Chance, we are special. And, because special people CARE.

I believe that one day we will better understand the Why. But for now, I accept the vastness, the specialness and, in APPRECIATION of being here, I choose to try to do “right” by my fellows.

Now, back to watching “The Mentalist.”
