Three Days to Go for Backlot Festival

Ross HawkinsA&E, Film

There are three more days of events and screenings at the 4th Backlot Film Festival, based at the Vets Auditorium, at the intersection of Overland and Culver Boulevard.

Highlights of the next three days include a screening of Patrick Swayze's last film, “Jump,” which will be released in December.

Swayze plays Richard Pressburger, a Jewish lawyer who defends young Phillippe Halsman who is accused of murdering his father. The trial takes place in 1928 Austria where Nazism is on the rise.

“Jump,” directed by Joshua Sinclair, is based on a true story.

Special guests for the screening include Stefanie Powers who co-stars as a newspaper reporter in the film, and Casting Director Marvin Paige, who helped assemble the International cast for the film.

On Friday evening, the world premiere of “Herstory,” directed by Krista Eulberg, will be held, and on Saturday evening the Festival will honor Mickey Rooney with the 4th Thomas Ince Award.  Also being honored that evening are Culver City's beloved Syd Kronenthal and Charles Champlin, author and movie critic.

I'm asking for your support for the Backlot Film Festival.

The Veterans Memorial Building is an excellent venue for great events, including live theatre, concerts and motion picture screenings. Set in Veterans Park, with plenty of free parking, patrons can walk to their cars in complete safety.

If people show up in large enough numbers for the Backlot Film Festival and other events, it could persuade the city to make the necessary modifications to make Veterans' Memorial Building a great showcase.

See you at the movies.

Mr. Hawkins is president and founder of the Backlot Film Festival.
