Getting Sick and Taking a Temporary Detour

Mike HennesseyOP-ED

Dateline Dayton – Sometimes the best of plans don’t work. In my essay of last week, which didn’t appear until Tuesday, I told you about my intention to set up at a flea market. That all changed last Wednesday night when I got the flu, which also was the cause of my essay being late.

A week earlier I had taken my flu shot, but, I guess, it wasn’t soon enough, because I really got sick. Last Friday morning I awoke with chest pains. I really should have had Pauline take me to the hospital instead of waiting to see my doctor. Since it was Friday, I knew my personal doctor would not be in, so I saw another doctor in the office. He asked a lot of questions, then said he was going to do an EKG and give me a gastric cocktail. He assured me it would taste awful.

The cocktail, a shot glass full of nasty tasting stuff that left your mouth feeling as if it were full of cotton balls, did the trick. Immediately, the pain went away. The EKG showed nothing abnormal. We returned home with instructions to take Mylanta.

Sports Break

The next day I felt a little better. I went to the office for a few minutes to send my article to Ari. From there I did go to the hardware store for a couple things I needed, but passed up the popcorn machine. In the evening I attended church with Pauline, as she was going on a trip on Sunday.

On Sunday, I attended our granddaughter’s soccer tournament. They lost by one goal Julia scoring but Julia scored both goals for our side.

Our son Chris drove to the soccer game and we made the second stop of the day at the hardware store on the way home. Good thing it is close to home. Any time I am doing a project, it seems I must make numerous trips. All I was doing was hanging my shot glass cabinet, which I had received earlier in the week. I must admit that I can make a simple project complicated. As with the shot glass cabinet, I felt it wasn’t strong enough to just be hung, as provided. I also made a shelf for it to rest on.

Chris and I also unloaded the car, and I tried to organize the garage so his items from his former home in Florida could be moved, and so Pauline could park her car in the garage again. I kept all of my cash register items, and the rest went to Goodwill or the Hospice Thrift Store. By the end of this week, the garage project might be completed, might being a key word.
