Graduating, Exactly as Intended

Mike HennesseyOP-ED

Dateline Dayton –I am deviating again from what should have been the final installment of our Florida trip, to share with you some current events. On Saturday, April 28, , Pauline and I traveled to Michigan for our granddaughter’s graduation from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. In the afternoon, Heather received her pin from the School of Nursing, a beautiful ceremony, with each participant writing a note of thanks and outlining her plans for the future. This was read as each graduate was being pinned.

Since the pinning ceremony started at 12:30 and none of us had eaten since breakfast, it was off to get something, prior to church, which started at 4:30. After completing our late lunch, we did have time to go to Heather’s dorm room to start getting her packed and the car loaded.

After church, where the graduates were recognized, all three of them, we headed for our hotel ten miles away. The University of Michigan also had their graduation on Saturday morning in their stadium, which was not covered, crucial because it rained. Since the Ann Arbor stadium is only a few miles from Eastern, hotel rooms were at a premium.

Upon arrival at the hotel and after check-in, it was decided that Heather, her mom and Pauline would return to the dorm room and complete the moving process. I tried to talk them into taking Ryan to help, but they assured me they could handle the situation. When they returned, we were ordering pizza for supper, which they thought would be around 9 o’clock.

They should have listened to me because they forgot the couch. I did, too. With the help of a dolly, they were able to get it out of the room. Since it wasn’t going back to Niles, it was placed in the recycling area. Pizza turned out to be a 10 o’clock affair.

Graduation was to start at 2, the procession at 1:40, and the entire ceremony, including speeches, was finished before 4. A dignified ceremony, the only disruptions being the yelling, at times, when names were read.

Heather passed an online class exam on Monday, and now needs to complete one more class – which she was unable to take during the school year – to actually receive her diploma. Beginning next Tuesday, she will take the class at the community college in Niles.

Having earned excellent grades, she should have no problem finding a job. We are very proud of Heather…

Add One More Year

Last Friday I celebrated my 71st birthday by attending a Dayton Dragons baseball game. We had a great time at the game, as we always do, even though the Dragons lost.

My co-workers had a party for my birthday and they entered me in their Kentucky Derby pool. I told them I had the winner, and I was right. With my winnings, I bought donuts for them…

Last Sunday, Pauline and I headed to Cincinnati, to see our youngest granddaughter play soccer. It was a hoot, watching six-year-olds on the field. After the game we went to our son’s house, and he fixed hamburgers for supper… Tomorrow we fly into Las Vegas for the start of our tour of the Grand Canyon. Neither of us has been to the Canyon, and we are really looking forward to this. We’re going with my sister and brother-in-law, who toured the Canyon on motorcycles some years ago.

We will spend the weekend in ‘Vegas and then head to the Skywalk on Monday, because it’s on my bucket list. Tuesday, we travel to Williams, for the start of the Grand Canyon tour by train.
