Second in a series, following “A Comeback Never Was in Corlin’s Portfolio.”
Former City Councilman Alan Corlin, now living happily in newly married life in Long Beach, has a message today for Council members who favor shooting term limits in the head.
Watching from the sidelines for seven years since leaving Council Chambers, Mr. Corlin said:
“You can get re-elected but you can’t come back.”
Mr. Corlin is a thinker, not one of those often-mocked electeds who spoke then thought.
The second time around never is as good as the first time – a pithy observation first birthed in Hollywood, later by veteran grooms, pockmarked brides and their progeny.
“You have a good experience when you are on the City Council for eight years (until 2008, in his case). Then you sit down for two years, and when you come back, you are with different people,” Mr. Corlin said.
“Your experience is different,” and you quickly realize the second time never is as good as the first time.
Mr. Corlin is a student of politics.
“When I looked around to other towns in our area – Santa Monica and other cities that elect the same people year after year – you may see vibrant towns with vibrant ideas. But it is the same people all the time.”
