First in a series.

When seven candidates were running for the City Council last winter and during the early spring, interviews commonly were conducted at various times of the day and night while standing on one foot.

There was no competition for early morning interviews.

There was not and is not any competition for Scott Wyant’s favorite interview hour.

Mr. Wyant is one of the earliest risers in Culver City – at least until a few weeks ago, it was assumed.

He is an inveterate and veteran surfer, who plunges in Manhattan Beach at dawn before the pesky human traffic thickens.

Not long after he finished behind the Council winners a month and four days ago, he fell startlingly ill.

Ultimately, he underwent brain surgery.

Since then, both before and after the delicate operation, correspondence with Mr. Wyant
has been restricted to texting.

Gradually, the texting has been gaining speed.

Mr. Wyant, the erudite King of Upbeat, is galloping back – or is it ahead? – toward normalcy.

Each day’s correspondence has been sunnier than the preceding one.

A new mountain peak was scaled yesterday.

The request for a texting update on his health was met with cymbals crashing.

“We could resume our chat Monday morning,” Mr. Wyant texted. Regular time.

At the appointed hour this morning, he answered the call on the first ring.

“If any people feel sorry for me,” he said, “they can stop that.”
