Brenda Marsh-Mitchell Was a Community Advocate

It is with great sadness that the Los Angeles Sentinel announces the passing of our beloved friend, family member and community advocate Brenda Marsh-Mitchell.

Ms. Marsh-Mitchell passed away of cardiac failure after being rushed to emergency surgery Saturday afternoon.

Danny Bakewell Sr., Chairman and Executive Publisher of the Sentinel, issued a brief statement:

“I am deeply saddened at the lost of my friend and confidant Brenda Marsh-Mitchell. Brenda loved and believed in family. She dedicated her life to serving and fighting for what is best for our people. We ask everyone to continue to pray for her family and friends as we all adjust through these most difficult times.”

Ms. Marsh-Mitchell was the Special Assistant to Mr. Bakewell. In this position, she had headed the planning and organizing of the annual “Taste of Soul Street Festival” since 2008 as well as being instrumental in increasing the number of subscribers to the newspaper. Ms. Marsh-Mitchell was president and CEO of “Mothers in Action” of Los Angeles, which involved providing services, information and a mechanism for mothers to be heard through various outreach activities. She was the director of community relations and vice president of governmental affairs with “Brotherhood Crusade”. In this capacity, she mobilized thousands for the Million Man March and she organized the feeding of hundreds of thousands through the annual homeless food program.

Ms. Marsh-Mitchell, a lifelong Democrat, was a member of the National Council of Negro Women. For many years, she worked alongside the late NCNW Executive Director, Dr. Meda H. Chamberlain.

Ms. Marsh-Mitchell’s life was dedicated to improving the quality of life for her family and her community.

She loved and served her Lord and savior Jesus Christ every day. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with grandchildren Kennedy and Mitch.
